What is made of this

A place where girls make real things and learn to handle the hard parts of making them

Every cohort, girls work using a different craft: embroidery, crochet, sewing, beading, weaving. The projects are chosen because they get difficult in the middle, not because they look nice at the end. That's where the interesting stuff happens. When something goes wrong. When it's harder than they expected. When they want to quit but don't. Girls learn that feeling stuck doesn't mean they can't figure it out. That making a mistake doesn't mean the whole thing is ruined. That not loving the result doesn't mean the work was wasted. Craft also teaches something that almost nothing else in a teenager's life does: things take time. You can't rush a row of stitches. You can't skip to the end. The only way to get better is to keep doing it — and that's hard when you're used to everything being instant. In here, girls practise being patient with a process and with themselves.

The six sessions

What actually happens each week

Week 1
Just try it
No instructions. No demo. Girls get materials and figure it out themselves. They'll get things wrong. That's the point — to see what happens when you try something without being told how first.
Week 2
Look first, then learn
Girls get real finished samples and study them — what do you see, how do you think this was made? They work it out before I teach anything. Then we go through the technique together.
Week 3
The hard middle
Every project has a point halfway through where it stops being fun and starts being difficult. This session, we hit that point on purpose. We talk about what it feels like. Each girl writes one word describing how she feels, seals it in an envelope, and puts it away until week 6.
Week 4
Unpick and redo
Each girl looks at her work, finds a part that isn't right, undoes it, and does it better. The practice here is simple: see what went wrong, understand why, and improve it. That's it.
Week 5
Your choice, your reasons
Each girl makes a deliberate choice — colour, texture, pattern — and says out loud why she chose it. Not "I don't know" or "I just liked it." A real reason. Learning to name what you want and why is harder than it sounds.
Week 6
3 hours
Final project + showcase
A new piece, made from scratch in one sitting, completely her own. Then we open the envelopes from week 3 — each girl reads her word and talks about what changed. Every girl gets a certificate with one specific quality I saw in her during the programme. Then we look at what everyone made.

Why made of this

I'm an engineer who got here because I knew how to make things

Growing up, I made things with my hands. That's where I learned to sit with a problem, try something, see why it didn't work, and try differently. It's where I developed the patience to keep going when I didn't have the answer yet. It's where I learned that I could figure things out. That way of thinking followed me into engineering, into problem-solving, into everything. Not because I was naturally resilient, but because craft taught me to be. Making something with your hands is one of the most honest environments there is. When something goes wrong, you can see it. You can't talk your way around it. You have to look at it, understand what happened, and do something about it. That's exactly what resilience is. Made of This was born to give teenage girls the experience of building something hard, getting it wrong, and working out how to make it better. Not as a metaphor. As something they actually did, with their own hands, and can point to.

I built Made of This because craft built me. I know what it does, and I want your daughter to have it too.
